2025 Term 3 Issue #9

From the Principal

 Dear families & friends,

Sports Day & Colour Run

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported our Sports Day and Colour Run! It was a really fabulous day (despite the weather to start the day). A big thank you again to Leigh for organising the running of the Sports day and Kelly for all the organising of the Colour Run. Everyone had a lovely day and the students all had a great time. Thanks again for all you support, our final tally for the fun run was exceptional. Yet again demonstrating we are small but we are mighty!

Piano Recital

On Wednesday 17th September, a group of our piano students performed to their families and friends on our first recital night. I was so impressed with their confidence, with most performing in front of an audience for the first time! Well done to all our students and to families for supporting our music program.

Auslan Choir

Congratulations to our Auslan Choir (pictured) who performed on Thursday 18th September in the SA Primary Schools Festival of Music at the Entertainment Centre. The 8 students (Annie, Stella, Nina, Crisnage, Tori, Evie, Zofia and Tess) have been giving up their play times and practicing regularly at school and at home with support of Sharni, demonstrating commitment to improvement, dedication and joy. I had the pleasure of going with these students and Sharni for the rehearsals and performance, in front of over 2000 people, and was so proud of them. They did a wonderful job of representing our school and themselves with courage and integrity on the night.

Inquiry Learning

Students are deeply engaged in our current Inquiry ‘Animal Survival Depends on Us’. Students are planning and creating something to share at learning expo on Tuesday 23rd September, that demonstrates their learning and thinking this term. We have given students and open scope to decide how and what way would best demonstrate their thinking. Some are finding their choice more successful than others. Through reflection and feedback at the end of the term they will be building on this learning into an ‘actionable’ plan for Term 4 based on their understanding of their learning this term.

 Pupil Free Days Term 4

Our term 4 Pupil Free days are crucial to ensuring we review our current year and do some whole site planning for the following year. Our Term 4 Pupil Free Days will be held on Friday 21st November and Monday 24th November.

Numbers 2026

We have recently sent out our ‘Intention to return’ form (pink form) to families. Thank you to everyone who has already returned these. It is important that we know this information early as it is the basis of our budgeting and staffing decisions. If you have not returned this yet please do so as soon as possible.

 Traffic update

The meeting that was arranged by Ken Clarke (Adelaide’s dad) has been beneficial. Clare Clutterham visited and stayed with us for an extended time to observe the traffic behaviour at the front of the school. It was clear to her that the current ‘crossing’ and signage are not working so she has been in touch with the council, who have now been in touch with me. They are now looking at changing our current ‘crossing’ to an Emu crossing.

Claire will also coming in next term to work with our year 5/6’s on some civics and citizenship concepts early next term as well.

Leading Future Learning Project

Sharni and I have had a follow up conversation with Pasi Sahlberg, who was the former leader of the highly regarded Education System in Finland, and very excited to announce that he will be visiting us in Week 2 next term! The opportunity to have such a highly regarded world education leader visit is incredible and we are so excited to be able to show him around our small and mighty school. He has also offered to connect us with other world leaders in innovative practices which has already proved beneficial as I have been able to connect with other leaders around the world who lead small schools that are working in similar holistic approaches as we are.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Learning Expo and wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday.

See you all in Term 4!

Cheers Skye 😊

Piano Recital

On Wednesday 17th September, a group of our piano students performed to their families and friends. We were all so impressed with the progress students have made this year and their confidence, with most performing in front of an audience for the first time! Well done to all our students and to families for supporting our music program.

If your child is interested in taking up piano as an instrument, please contact Kat (details later in the newsletter). She has 1 or 2 spots available starting next term.

A reminder that for students in yr 3-6 families can also access our strings program for minimal cost to families. Contact Gillian if your child is interested in taking up violin, viola or cello.

Auslan Choir

On Thursday 18th September, our school Auslan Choir (Tori, Stella, Crisnage, Annie, Nina, Tess, Zofia and Evie) went to the Entertainment Centre for the Festival of Music. We were placed at the front of the stage with other school choirs behind us and performed the Australian Anthem by signing in Auslan to an audience of 2-3000 people. It was an amazing experience and we all had a fantastic time. We were one of 48 different schools there on the night. We enjoyed rehearsing before we went on stage too. We loved it so much that we are hoping to do it again soon. By Tori (P1)

Book Expo Celebration

Despite the forecast for rain, our Junior Book Expo Campfire Night was a huge success! Instead of gathering outdoors, we created a cosy indoor setting complete with a plush “campfire,” where students and their families came together to celebrate a term of hard work. Everyone enjoyed delicious s’mores while our young authors proudly shared their personal narratives with their families. We are thrilled to see how many students achieved their individual writing goals this term and are excited to support them as they embark on their new goals moving forward.

News from Laura's Class (P1)

Our recent visit to Payneham Library involved choosing a task from the scavenger hunt and finding a book based on the topic. Students then wrote three interesting pieces of information about their book. Our visits to the library are becoming a highlight of our learning as we explore the rich resources available.

Steve's Class (P2) News

In P2 we’ve been busy wrapping up our work on data in maths and have now jumped into the exciting world of angles. The class has been exploring how to identify, measure, and compare different angles, and everyone is enjoying the challenge of connecting these new skills to shapes and objects. It’s been great to see students building confidence and applying their learning in creative ways. In literacy, we are heading towards the end of term with some fantastic spooky stories in the making. Students are planning and writing narratives full of suspense, atmosphere, and imagination. Earlier this term, we also completed a writing project where each student chose a historical question to investigate and presented their findings through an expository text. This gave everyone the chance to become mini-historians and share their knowledge in clear and thoughtful writing. It’s been a busy and inspiring time in P2, with lots of learning, creativity, and excitement filling the classroom.

PE & Health with Leigh

First of all, just wanted to say a huge thank you to those who came to the 2025 Sports Day. It is always a day that is made better by having our families involved. Congratulations to Laura's Yellow team on be this year's winners.

It has been great to get the students outside as the weather has been improving of late. In juniors, the last few weeks have been focused on improving our jumping and throwing skills through simple games.

Laura's students have been focusing on skipping and target games, with the aim to design their own game next term. Steve's class have been investigating the different aspects of health-related fitness through fitness circuits and then goal setting to improve an area of fitness.

In health, the juniors have been learning about kind vs unkind behaviours. The primary students have been investigating health messages that we see in every day life.
